CIPROLEX-TZ (Ciprofloxacin & Tinidazole Tablets)



Please read this leaflet carefully before you start taking CIPROLEX-TZ TABLETS as it contains important information. If you have any questions or would like to know more about these tablets, ask your pharmacist. Keep the leaflet, as you may want to read it again.

What is in CIPROLEX-TZ Tablets?

Each tablet contains Ciprofloxacin 500mg & Tinidazole 600mg as the active ingredients. Other inactive ingredients (excipients) are Sodium starch glycolate, starch, Aerosol (colloidal silicon dioxide), Magnesium stearate, Microcrystalline cellulose, Sodium lauryl sulphate, Polyvinyl alcohol, Talc powder, Titanium dioxide, Polyethylene glycol 6000, Soya lecithin, Propylene glycol, Lake tartrazine yellow & purified water.

Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum quinolone antibiotic effective against both gram positive and gram-negative organisms and Tinidazole is an anti-protozoal agent exerting its effects on a wide range of anaerobic infections. 

What is CIPROLEX-TZ used for?

CIPROLEX-TZ is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by gram positive and gram-negative organisms and infections caused by anaerobes and protozoal infections. CIPROLEX-TZ is also used in bacterial vaginosis, acute ulcerative gingivitis and other dental infections, surgical prophylaxis, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections & gastro-intestinal infections of either protozoan or bacterial origin.

Contradictions

CIPROLEX-TZ should not be taken by anyone with a hypersensitivity to the quinolone group or the nitroimidazole group of compounds or patients with a history of blood dyscrasias. CIPROLEX-TZ should not be co-administered with tizanidine.

Cautions before you take CIPROLEX-TZ tablets.

CIPROLEX-TZ Tablets are suitable for most people. Ask yourself the following questions to check whether this product is suitable for you:

  • Are you pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breast-feeding?
  • Are you sensitive to any of the active ingredients or any similar medicines?
  • Do you suffer from liver or kidney problems?
  • Do you suffer from epilepsy or other neurological conditions?
  • Do you have a history of tendon problems during previous treatment with quinolone antibiotics?
  • Do you suffer from myasthenia gravis (a type of muscle weakness)
  • Do you have a history of abnormal heart rhythms (arrythmias)
If the answer to any of the above questions is YES, then consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking the tablets.

 Interactions

The action of CIPROLEX-TZ can also be affected by, or have an effect on, other types of medication. If you are currently taking any of the following medicines you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking CIPROLEX-TZ Warfarin or other oral anti-coagulants, probenecid, methotrexate, theophylline, tizanidine, clozapine, ropinirole. phenytoin, pentoxifylline.
Some medicines reduce the effect of CIPROLEX-TZ. Tell your doctor if you take or wish to take:

  • anticids.
  • mineral supplements.
  • sucralfate.
  • a polymeric phosphate binder (e.g. sevelamer).
  • medicines or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum or iron.
If these preparations are essential, take CIPROLEX-TZ about two hours before or at least four hours after.

How to take CIPROLEX-TZ Tablets

Your doctor will have decided the dose that is suitable for you and the treatment duration.
The usual dose for adults and children over 12 years is ONE tablet twice daily, with food or immediately after food. However, you should avoid eating or drinking any dairy products (such as milk or yogurt) or drinks with added calcium when you take these tablets as these can affect the absorption of CIPROLEX TZ. You should take your tablets either 1 to 2 hours before or at least 4 hours after you have such products.
You should continue taking your course of antibiotics for as long as the doctor tells you to. If you stop the treatment too early, your problem could come back.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is time for the next dose.

Do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Precautions whilst taking CIPROLEX-TZ

You are advised not to drink alcohol whilst taking CIPROLEX-TZ and for 48 hours after finishing your course of tablets as this might cause unpleasant side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, hot flushes, palpitations and headache.

Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding

It is preferable to avoid the use of CIPROLEX-TZ during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are planning to get pregnant. Do not take CIPROLEX-TZ during breast feeding as both active ingredients are excreted in breast milk and could be harmful to your child.

Possible side effects

CIPROLEX-TZ is generally well tolerated. You may experience gastro-intestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, diarrhea or metallic taste and sometimes headache or dizziness. These effects normally wear off after a few days of treatment, but if they persist, worsen or you experience any other unusual side effects, consult your doctor at once.

Photosensitivity and allergic reactions have been reported with CIPROLEX-TZ, but these reactions are rare and vary in severity. If you develop any type of skin rash after taking CIPROLEX-TZ, consult your doctor at once.

In case of overdose

If you accidentally ingest too many tablets, go to your nearest hospital casualty department immediately or contact your physician.

Storing CIPROLEX-TZ Tablets

Keep the medicine in the original packaging in a cool and dark place.
Do not use it after the expiry date shown on the pack.

Keep out of reach of children.
