SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Doses of 600 mg or more daily have a diuretic action. Tolerance may be induced in patients taking high doses.

Large doses may cause excessive urination, diarrhea, other gastro-intestinal disturbances, and the formation of renal calcium oxalate calcul. Acidification of the urine by ascorbic acid may cause precipitation of cystine or oxalate stones in the urinary tract and will alter the excretion of certain drugs administered concurrently. Other side effects include nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT: Large doses cause diarrhea, and the formation of renal calcium oxalate calculi gastric lavage may be given if ingestion is recent otherwise general supportive measures should be employed as required.

INTERACTION WITH FOOD AND DRUGS

Ascorbic acid may increase the absorption of iron in iron-deficiency states. Ascorbin is often given in addition to deferoxamine to patients with iron overload to achieve better iron excretion. When there is excess tissue iron there is some evidence that ascorbic acid may worsen the iron toxicity, particularly to the heart. Ascorbin should not be given for the first month after starting deferoxamine treatment. occasional reports of ascorbic acid reducing the activity of warfarin have not been confirmed.
